...Librarians know David Small as the deserving recipient of the Caldecott Medal, the Christopher Medal, and the E.B. White Award for children's picture books like Imogene's Antlers—a book I loved reading to my daughter when she was younger. What they don't know is that when Small was a child....

6. Visual Bookshelf on Facebook, Tue, Jun 30, 2009

...He does a great job with the dreams and fantasies of childhood, which isn't surprising since he is the author of a number of children's picture books, including "So, You Want to Be President?" which won a Caldecott, and "Imogene's Antlers," about which I know nothing but isn't that a marvelous title? I know this from Norton's "Dear Librarian" letter -- I had never heard of him. I am going to have to seek out some of his earlier books....

Oh my god! David Small wrote and illustrated my absolute favorite children's book Imogene's Antlers in 1985. I had no idea he had such a terrible childhood, and that he had written a comic about it. I am definately going to have to pick this up....

9. Kidliterate (MO), Thu, Aug 6, 2009

...David Small has made his name illustrating children’s picture books. You know that; I didn’t, until Melissa told me about Small and passed me Stitches, Small’s first graphic novel, a medium about which I do know something...
*from Melissa: my favorites are WHEN EVERYTHING CAME WITH DINOSAURS; THE LIBRARY; and IMOGENE’S ANTLERS, which Small also wrote. However, picking which David Small art is the best is like picking which chocolate cupcake is best. They’re all good....

10. BookPage (OR), Mon, Aug 17, 2009

...Small says if there are hints of his troubled childhood in the children’s books he has written and illustrated (Imogene’s Antlers, Hoover’s Bride, Paper John), they only appear in subtext. “It’s all very hidden,” he says. “When you’re working for children, you’ve got to put some restraints on....

11. Portland Mercury (OR), Sun, Aug 30, 2009

...Powell's has a subscription book club called Indiespensable... Their 13th volume ships on September 9, and it is, notably, the first graphic novel to be released by the series: David Small's Stitches. Small is a children's book author, best known (to my generation, at least) for Imogene's Antlers, and technically I suppose I should call Stitches his "graphic memoir"....

14. Not Just For Kids, Mon, Sep 14, 2009

...anyone who is familiar with the bigger picture knows that David Small grew up to become a Caldecott Medal winner, married a fellow writer, wrote and illustrated the playful Imogene's Antlers, and--most importantly--survived the story within the pages of Stitches. His is ultimately a story of triumph! And yet.....well.....let's just say, thank goodness for catharsis....

17. Good Reads, Fri, Oct 2, 2009

...As a side note: David Small wrote and illustrated one of my favorite picture books ever, Imogene's Antlers. I did not find this out until after I read Stitches. This is probably a good thing, since the dark subject matter did not have a chance to clash with my fond memories of watching Imogene's Antlers on Reading Rainbow....

... While Small is well known for his award-winning children’s books (“Imogene’s Antlers,” “The Gardener,” and “So, You Want to Be President?”) and his career as editorial artist for publications such as The New Yorker and The Washington Post, I believe this latest work, published this fall, will be added to his collection of accolades. 23. Good Reads, Mon, Oct 19, 2009

...Small's graphic novel memoir, Stitches, is astounding in its ability to portray emotional desolation and family conflict. Small's illustrations beautifully (and tragically) capture the heartache of being a child in a dysfunctional family. His characters, though almost crudely drawn at times, are evocative and harrowing in their display of childhood trauma, denial, and unaddressed issues. I grew up a fan of Small's thanks to Reading Rainbow's feature on Imogene's Antlers. This volume stands in stark contrast to that, but has definitely left me wanting more from Small....

...This was the first graphic novel I have ever read. It was a heart-breaking story about David Small's childhood and his coming of age. His story is an amazing journey that could have been so much worse if it had not been for his amazing resilience and the help of someone who cared.
The fact that he wrote one of my favorite kid's stories and that he grew up in that type of environment with the trials that he had, is truly amazing to me.
I think the next time I read Imogene's Antlers, I will see it through different eyes....

25. Hennepin County Library, Wed, Oct 21, 2009

...In Stitches, a new work presented in graphic art form, David Small tells the story of his lonely childhood (abuse, cancer, mother from hell). Never gratuitous, this redemptive memoir is a powerful experience and impossible to forget. In a word: wow. (David Small wrote and illustrated many children’s books including the popular Imogene’s Antlers.)...

...
In 2000, British illustrator Raymond Briggs, famed for his wordless children's book The Snowman, published a superb graphic novel about his parents, situating them as a typical English working-class couple during the half-century between the Depression and the 1970s. Now another children's book illustrator has turned to the form for a memoir of his childhood. Small has illustrated many books to acclaim, including Russell Hoban's charming The Mouse and His Child, and is both author and illustrator of Imogene's Antlers and other books....

...Stitches was recently nominated for the National Book Award in the Young People's Literature category, which is how I became aware of it. The wonderful librarians on the YALSA listserv were having a very interesting conversation on whether or not the Young People's Literature category was its proper home, and I became intrigued enough that I had to read it for myself.

30. The Hungry Readers, Wed, Nov 11, 2009

...
I don’t know about you, friends, but I love graphic novels. There’s something about the ability of the author to transmit details to us visually, without needing to spell everything out in print, that I just find fantastic. On the other hand, this is a book by the man who wrote Imogene’s Antlers, which I adored with all my heart and soul at age five, and I was unsure I’d be able to handle the sharp contrast between that lighthearted children’s favorite, and this 300-page-long child’s nightmare....

31. Good Reads, Fri, Nov 13, 2009

...Today David Small is best known as the award-winning illustrator of quirky, delightful children’s books like The Gardener, The Underneath, Imogene’s Antlers, and When Dinosaurs Came with Everything. It’s pretty obvious that his own childhood was not nearly as picture perfect, but his journey from voiceless boy to critically-acclaimed artist is haunting, memorable, and un-put-downable....
